Midland, Texas – The University of Oklahoma men’s tennis program completed the first round of the Racquet Club Invitational, Friday, hosted by the Racquet club in Midland, Texas.

“We have had some good wins so far in the tournament,” said head coach John Roddick. “All-in-all it was a really great day for our program."

OU sent four players to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Invitational this weekend.

Senior Andrei Daescu is the tournaments second overall seed and throughout the first day of action he defeated two Big 12 foes. First, Daescu defeated Jon Weigand of Texas 6-2, 6-3. He followed that performance by defeating Texas A&M’s Marcus Lunt 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

“Andrei struggled through his second match but found a way to get the job done and pull off the victory,” said Roddick.

Fellow senior Blake Boswell had a stellar first match beating Rice’s Dennis Polyako 6-3, 6-1. However, Boswell fell in his second match to the tournaments third seed Alex Llompart of Pepperdine 7-5, 6-2.

Junior Ionut Beleleu put in a great performance on the first day. He defeated ACU’s Bryan Jointer 6-2, 6-0. Unfortunately, Beleleu did not fare as well in his second match as he was pitted against top-seeded Bruno Rosa of Rice. Beleleu fell 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

“Ionut did some great things. He had a great chance to get a win against a highly-ranked player,” said Roddick. “All-in-all he played well and proved to himself that he could win those types of matches.”

The other Sooner to make it to the second day of competition was sophomore George Chanturia. Chanturia defeated Texas Techs Jared Hope 6-1, 6-3 in his first match. In the second match Chanturia defeated New Mexico’s Phil Anderson 6-4, 6-1.

“George played really well,” said Roddick. “He had an impressive game-plan and didn’t make many errors. He has an opportunity, tomorrow, to get a ranked win.”
