STILLWATER, Okla. – The 49th-ranked Oklahoma women’s tennis squad earned a 4-3 Bedlam victory over No. 46 Oklahoma State on the road at the DeBois Tennis Complex.
“This was really a great win for us today,” David Mullins said. “Our freshmen came ready to play and looked outstanding all day long. Whitney Ritchie and Mia Lancaster were so tough yet again so it was a great team effort.”
With the win, Mullins’ squad moved to 2-0 against Oklahoma State this season, sweeping the Bedlam series and improving to 10-10 overall and 5-3 in Big 12 action.
The Sooners fell behind early after the Cowgirls’ earned the doubles point as OSU won matchups at No. 1 and 2.
OSU’s Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana defeated OU’s 46th-ranked tandem comprised of Whitney Ritchie and Marie-Pier Huet at the No. 1 position, 8-3.
Action concluded at the No. 2 spot when the Cowgirls’ Mary Jeremiah and Meghan Blevins downed the Sooners’ Abbi Melrose and Mia Lancaster, 8-4.
OU’s Whitney Wofford and Peta Maree Lancaster clawed out OU’s only win at the No. 3 position over Oklahoma State’s C.C. Sardinha and Leyla Simmons, 8-6.
The Sooners came storming back in singles action taking four of the first five matches to claim the victory over their Big 12 foes.
Lancaster was the first to finish after she claimed a 6-2, 7-5 victory at the No. 3 spot over OSU’s Rose.
Ritchie gave Oklahoma its first lead of the dual after she cruised to a 6-2 victory in the first set and a 7-5 win in the second over the Cowgirls’ Sardinha.
Melrose added to OU’s advantage after she finished off Narattana at the No. 4 position, 6-3, 6-1.
Oklahoma State’s Blevins narrowed the Sooners’ lead after she earned a win at No. 2 over Huet in identical set fashion, 6-2.
The match was decided at the No. 6 spot where OU’s Long squeaked out a 7-5 victory in the first set, but ran away in the second with a decisive 6-0 win to give Oklahoma the win.
With the match already decided OSU’s Jeremiah earned a super-tiebreaker victory over OU’s Wofford in the third set to give the Cowgirls’ their third point of the match.
“We finally get a weekend off and I am hoping we can finish our season off on a high note,” Mullins said.
Next up, OU hosts Red River Rival Texas on Saturday, April 21 at noon.
