OU Finishes Third in Las Cruces

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team finished in third place at the Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., after firing a 54-hole score of 903 (+39) at the 6,319-yard, par-72 New Mexico State University Golf Course.  The Sooners shot a final-round 305 (+17) on Wednesday.
Oklahoma finished four shots back of Big 12 rival Baylor, who took second. UC –Irvine led the entire tournament, capping off the win with a third round 286 (-2).

“Today was a rough day for the Sooners,” OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said.  “In our final round we still beat some key teams and will continue to get better and stronger with this experience.”

Freshman Kelly Short placed a career-best 12th after carding her third straight 75 on Wednesday. Senior Kendall Dye fired a 79 (+7) in the final round and ended in a tie for 22nd place with a score of 228 (+12). 

Finishing in a tie for 22nd with Dye was sophomore Sara Hemingway, who shot a 2-over-par 74.

One stroke behind Dye and Hemingway was Brooke Collins.  The freshman recorded her third consecutive tournament with a 229 (+13), tying for 29th place. 

Sophomore Ellen Mueller rounded out the tournament with a final round score of 78 (+6) and three-round score of 230 (+14). 

Competing individually, senior Staci Smoot shot her best score of the tournament on Wednesday by firing a 74 (+2), finishing in a tie for 41st place.
“Kelly and Sara came in strong for us,” Ludvigson said.  “Brooke was so close to making some putts, while Kendall and Ellen both had a rough day but worked very hard until the end.”

“As I have said every time, this team is a team of fighters and work very hard until the end.  This attitude will pay off in the long run.”

Fall tournament action will wrap up after the Sooners compete in the Kent Youel Invitational, hosted by the University of Hawaii on Oct.23-29. in Kapolei, O’ahu.
