SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The University of Oklahoma women's soccer team shut out Texas, 2-0, in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament Wednesday in front of 900 fans at Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. The Sooners, the sixth seed in the tournament, defeated the No. 3 seed Longhorns for the second time this season. Oklahoma improved to 10-8-1 on the year while Texas fell to 12-7.
Junior forward Jonette Coquat put Oklahoma on the board just 5:20 into the game after scoring off her own deflected shot. Coquat's goal gave her 20 points on the year, a new OU single-season mark.
The game remained 1-0 until the 87th minute when sophomore forward Shannon Wing scored her fifth goal of the season after taking a pass from freshman forward Logan Womack in the box.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jana Cunningham (8-7-1) picked up the shutout victory while stopping 11 shots. It was Cunningham's fifth shutout of a conference team this year. She held off a Longhorn squad that registered 29 shots to Oklahoma's eight. Shay Wilkerson (12-7) took the loss for Texas.
"The first goal, coming so early in the game, actually put us back on our heels. Fortunately, our defense held up," said Oklahoma Head Coach Randy Evans. "I was extremely pleased with the way we scored those two goals. Both were executed very nicely."
The Sooners moved into the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament and will play No. 9 Texas A&M Thursday at 5 p.m. at Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. The Aggies, the second seed in the tournament, defeated Colorado, 3-1, in the first round.
