NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men’s golf team welcomes back former players this weekend with the 9th Annual Vickers Cup at the Jimmie Austin Golf Course Sunday, Oct. 24.

The Vickers Cup is based on the Ryder Cup format and features eight teams of two, four of alumni and four of current players, competing head-to-head through 18 holes.

The most anticipated matchup pits 2004 British Open champion Todd Hamilton and Doug Martin against All-Americans Anthony Kim and Carlos Del Moral.

Hamilton (1985-87) and Martin (1987-89) are a pair of three-time All-Americans themselves.

Kim of La Qunita, Calif., was the 2003 NCAA Phil Mickelson Freshman of the Year. In two tournaments this season, Kim posted second and 14th-place finishes.

Del Moral of Valencia, Spain, joined the OU golf team in January 2004 as the Spanish Boy (under 18) Champion and earned All-America, All-Central Region and All-Big 12 honors despite playing only the spring schedule.

Play will begin at 8 a.m.

“The OU athletic department has been tremendous in making sure former athletes are still part of the program,” said OU head coach Jim Ragan at a reunion reception Friday night. “It’s very special for our players to have that type of atmosphere.”

The event is named in honor of the Vickers family, who has been a dedicated supporter of the University of Oklahoma golf program throughout the years.

“The purpose of the Vickers Cup is to build support for the golf program,” former Sooner Lynn Blevins said. “The popularity of the tournament has grown every year. Everyone just loves it because it’s a great time to come back and be with old teammates and to be back on campus.”

“Our hope is that this event will build every year,” said organizer Rick Bell, “and that eventually we’ll have enough alumni return that we can play by era. It’s our goal to have teams from the 50s, 60s, 70s each decade up to now.”

In the history of the Vickers Cup, the alumni team has never beaten the OU team. The last two matches, however, ended in draws.
