Flores Finalist for National POY

NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma junior shortstop Amber Flores has been named a top 10 finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. Flores joins the nation’s best players on the list to determine college softball’s top player. Flores currently leads Oklahoma and the Big 12 in a majority of statistical categories.

Hailing from Calexico, Calif., Flores leads Oklahoma in batting average, hitting .417 on the year. She is 55-for-132 with 53 runs driven in and 55 scored on the year. While having 195 official at-bats, Flores has registered two sacrifice flies, been hit by a pitch 17 times and leads the team with 44 walks drawn. Her slugging percentage stands at an astounding .864. She reaches base 59.5 percent of the time.

This award, which is considered the most prestigious honors in Division I women’s collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. Past winners of this award include UCLA’s Stacey Nuveman, Florida State’s Jessica Van der Linden, Tennessee’s Monica Abbott and Virginia Tech’s Angela Tincher.

The Top 10 list represents 10 schools and five different NCAA Division I Conferences. The list is comprised of five seniors, four juniors, and one sophomore. The 2009 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be chosen from the 10 finalists.

The three finalists will be announced May 20th while the winner of the 2009 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced prior to the start of the 2009 NCAA Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
