NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma Director of Athletics/VP Joe Castiglione and head coach Paul Lockwood announced the men's tennis schedule for the 2008 season on Jan. 11.
"Our program is really looking forward to this season. Once again we have a very challenging schedule," head coach Paul Lockwood said. "Our non-conference schedule is going to be very tough but that is a positive because it will help prepare us for the Big 12, which is one of the top conferences in the country."
OU starts the year with eight straight road events, including a season-opening trip to the Arkansas Invitational in Wichita, Kan., Jan. 19-20.
The Sooners round out the month of January with a meeting against Fresno State at Willow Creek Country Club in Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma begins February with a trip to Old Dominion followed by trips to Virginia Common Wealth, Minnesota and Wisconsin-Green Bay. February ends with matches against Arkansas at Willow Creek Country Club and a trip up the turnpike to Tulsa.
The squad opens up the home portion of its schedule on March 2 when Oral Roberts and East Central Oklahoma visit Norman.
After a March 5 road match at TCU and a home match against Memphis, the Sooners will travel to Montgomery, Ala. for the Blue-Gray National Classic on March 13-16.
The Sooners finish up March and the non-conference portion of the schedule with a trip to Jacksonville and home meets against Cameron and Oklahoma Baptist. The demanding Big 12 schedule begins with a trip to Texas A&M on March 28 and OU stays in Texas for a March 30 match against the No. 7 Longhorns in Austin.
OU hosts Texas Tech on April 4 and Baylor on April 13 before making its last Big 12 road trip when they travel up Interstate-35 for the Ford Bedlam Series on April 16.
The Sooners close out the regular season when Nebraska comes to Norman on April 20.
The 2008 Big 12 Championships will be held April 25-27 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
"I am excited for our student-athletes because they have worked extremely hard this year and we look forward to reaching our goals we have set forth," added Lockwood.
The 2008 NCAA Tournament will begin on May 10-11 with regional play at campus sites still to be announced.
The NCAA National Championships (May 16-25) will be played in the state of Oklahoma at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa.
Oklahoma's 2007 season came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Stillwater, Okla. OU finished the season 20-9 overall and 2-4 in Big 12 play. The Sooners were selected to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005 and advanced to the second round. A win over California in the first round was OU's 20th of the season, marking the first 20-win season since 1994.
