Schutte Leads Sooners in California
March 06, 2007

NORMAN, Okla.   Oklahoma’s Jesse Schutte tied a career-best tournament score of +4 Tuesday afternoon en route to a tie for 20th place at the 30th annual USC Collegiate Invitational on the 6,742-yard North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.  The Florence, Ore., native led the Sooners to a tie for eighth in a 15-team field that featured six teams ranked in Golf Weeks’s latest top-15 rankings.

OU’s three-round total of 883 (+31) marked the second best score of all unranked teams and was four strokes ahead of conference rival Texas Tech (the Red Raiders are ranked 35th in the latest Golf Week rankings).

No. 1 Stanford won the team title with a score of 4 under (848).  The Cardinal was the only team under par, besting tournament host USC by five strokes.  Starting the day in a tie for third, USC’s Rory Hie won medalist honors with a 5-under-par 208. Trojan teammate and overnight co-leader Jamie Lovemark was two strokes back after a final-round 74.

Posting a front-nine team total of 2-under-par, Oklahoma climbed into a fifth-place tie at the midway mark of the final round.

“The front nine was the tougher of the two nines, so it was nice to see us moving in the right direction,” said head coach Jim Ragan. “For us to get out to the start we did bodes well for the rest of the year.”

Phillip Bryan fired a bogey-free 3-under-par 32 on the front that included birdies at the fourth, seventh and ninth. After his front-nine 32, Bryan had birdies at No. 12 and 16 but double-bogeyed the 15th, 17th and 18th to fall to 1 over par on the day.  The Mustang, Okla., native’s three-round 220 (+7) placed the junior in a tie for 30th.

Schutte got out of the gates with a birdie on the first followed by five straight pars.  The freshman bogeyed the par-3 seventh but gained a stroke back with a four at the par-5 eighth and finished the front at 1 under par. Schutte led OU with a back-nine 1-over-par 37 that included birdies on both par 5s to go along with bogeys at the final three par-4s for an even-par 71.

Senior J.J. Wood, who posted a top-10 finish in last season’s USC Collegiate for Pepperdine, was a stroke back of Schutte on the front at even par. Wood started the back with four straight pars before double-bogeying the 14th.  The Yuma, Ariz., product responded with a birdie at No. 15 but bogeyed the 18th to finish with a 2-over-par 73.  He carded his second top-25 finish of the season (he placed 25th) at 5-over-par.

Rounding out the OU scoring were Nick Sheedy and Ben Blundell, who posted matching 77s.  Sheedy finished in a tie for 58th in his first start of the spring while Blundell’s +24 (237) placed him in 76th.

“Finishing in eighth was disappointing as we felt that after our front nine we were in a position to put up one of our best showings of the season,” added Ragan.  “It is a step in the right direction though as the guys gained some valuable tournament experience that will benefit us as we continue our spring slate.”

The Sooners return to the links next weekend at the Hackler Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The tournament, hosted by sixth-ranked Coastal Carolina will be held at the par-72, 6,950-yard TPC of Myrtle Beach and features a field that includes six qualifiers at last season’s NCAA Championships.
