Sooners Ninth After 18 in Puerto Rico

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team stands tied for ninth place after one round at the 16-team, season-opening Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, P.R.  The Sooners carded a 306 (+18) at the par-72, 6,219-yard Championship Course of the Trump International Golf Club.

Georgia leads the tournament after shooting a 292 and is followed by Alabama in second (295) and host Purdue in third (296).

OU shares the ninth-place slot with Northwestern (ranked No. 38 by Golfweek) and fellow Big 12 member Baylor.  The Sooners are four shots in front of 27th-ranked Florida State and nine strokes clear of 49th-ranked Iowa State.

Leading the Sooners, in typical fashion, was junior Ellen Mueller.  Mueller finished the day tied for sixth place after shooting an even-par 72.  She fired a 35 on the front nine and followed with a 37 on the back side.  Mueller trails leader Thea Hoffmeister of Purdue by six strokes. 

Senior Chelsey Collins trails Mueller by five strokes and is tied for 37th place.  Collins, who is making her 2009-10 debut, shot a 40 on the front and a 37 on the back for her 77 (+5).

Aly Seng shot a 78 (+6) and is in 44th place while fellow freshman Taylor Schmidt carded a 79 (+7) and stands in 50th place.  Senior Andrea Sellmeyer recorded an 80 (+8) and is tied for 61st place.

The second of three rounds at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic will begin Monday at 6:10 a.m. CT.
