The No. 8 University of Oklahoma women’s golf team placed sixth at the Las Vegas Founders Women’s Collegiate Showdown in Las Vegas, Nev., with a three-round total of 900 (+36). The Sooners recorded a 308 (+20) in the final round, which was played in inclement weather. OU finished 31 strokes behind tournament champion and No. 7 ranked New Mexico. The 15-team field, that included three top-25 teams, played at the 6,914-yard, par-72 Anthem Country Club.
Oklahoma wrapped up its fall season with this tournament. The Sooners won two tournament championships and recorded two other top-five finishes in five tournaments this fall. OU’s two tournament championships is a fall season best for the program. Also, Oklahoma’s current ranking is the highest recorded in a fall season.
Once again, senior Lisa Meldrum led the Sooners. Meldrum earned fifth place honors, four strokes off the lead, after recording a three-over-par 75 in the final round for a tournament total of 217 (+1). Meldrum has finished in the top-five in every tournament this fall. Junior Emily Milberger carded a final-round 76 (+4) and tied for 18th with a 224 (+8). Sophomore Amparo Gala shot a final-round 77 (+5) for a total of 226 (+10) and a tie for 22nd. Senior Hope Edge tied for 43rd after recording an 80 (+8) in the final round for a tournament total of 234 (+18). Freshman Jaclyn Stelzer shot an 85 (+13) in the final round and placed 64th with a 241 (+25).
The Sooners will begin spring competition Feb 22-24, when they open with the Puerto Rico Invitational in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
