Women's Golfers in Third Place After First Round Action

In its spring-opening tournament, the No. 15 Oklahoma women’s golf is in third place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  The Sooners recorded a five-over-par 293 at the 6,000-yard, par-72 Dorado Del Mar Country Club.   OU trails first-place Duke (No. 1) by eight strokes and second-place Georgia (No. 7) by one stroke.  The Sooners’ competition includes a 15-team field with 10 top-25 teams according to the Golfweek poll.

Three Sooners are in the top 15 heading into second-round play.  Leading the Sooner quintet is senior Lisa Meldrum who is currently tied for second with a two-under-par 70.  Meldrum, who is recovering from a month-long battle with mononucleosis, trails leader Virada Nirapathpongporn (Duke) by four strokes.  Sophomore Amparo Gala is currently tied for eighth after carding a one-over-par 73.  Junior Emily Milberger shot a 74 (+2) and is tied for 14th place while senior Hope Edge is tied for 24th with a first-round 76 (+4).  Rounding out the Sooner squad is freshman Jaclyn Stelzer who is tied for 56th after recording an 81 (+9).

 Oklahoma will play 18 holes Monday and conclude the tournament on Tuesday.
