NORMAN - Justin Conkling won the Mt. Sac Relays decathlon title on Friday, and late Monday he became OU's second consecutive Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week.

Conkling's award came one week after senior Bambi Carson won the honor for her double victory at the John Jacobs Invitational on April 14.

Conkling had the lead in the decathlon after the first day and maintained it throughout the second day. The Weatherford, Okla., senior posted an NCAA provisional mark of 7,367 points to win the title, bypassing the standard by more than 200 points. He set seven career bests in the two days of competition. His final point total is the third best in school history and ranked as the sixth best collegiate mark as of Saturday.

The 2001 Big 12 Indoor heptathlon champion set career-best marks in the 100-meter dash, 1500-meter run, 110-meter high hurdles, pole vault, javelin, shot put and decathlon total.

It was his first decathlon competition of the season. He opened the season at the Texas A&M Multis but had to pull out with an injury.
