NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's soccer team posted its fifth shutout in six games this season with a 1-0 win over Southwest Missouri State Friday night at the OU Soccer Complex in front of a season-high 608 fans. The Sooners improved to 5-1 while the Bears fell to 3-2-1.
Sophomore Logan Womack scored the game's lone goal, in the 34th minute, after receiving a short lob from senior Jonette Coquat. Womack then streaked down the right side and hit the ball over SMS goalie Alexis Stormo for the goal, her sixth in as many games this year.
"We certainly generated several scoring opportunities but we just couldn't carry them through," said Head Coach Randy Evans. "Jonette (Coquat) played a key role coming of the bench. Her energy was one of the primary reasons why we scored that goal. Their defensive style of play was similiar to how a lot of teams played us last year. The only difference is we're winning those types of games this season."
Oklahoma kept the pressure on in the second half, as the team tallied six shots on goal after halftime, but was turned away. Freshman Catherine Wade and junior Jana Cunningham combined on the shutout while Stormo took the loss, despite 10 saves.
The Bears came close to tying the game late in the second half. With under three minutes to play in the game, Alina Aliamo fired a shot, after an OU foul, that was snagged in the air by Cunningham.
OU returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Southeastern Louisiana at 7:30 p.m.
