Just like the revamped SoonerSports.com, Inside Glimpse, which chronicles the happenings of the Oklahoma women's gymnastics program through the eyes of assistant coach Nilson Savage, is back with a new look. Savage's Inside Glimpse, which has been a regular feature on OU's athletics website for the last year, focuses on news and issues that the sporting public does not usually have access to.
Norman, Okla - Three weeks have gone by since we have started school and our voluntary workouts. Luckily, we have been blessed with a group of athletes that are willing to go the extra mile to represent the University of Oklahoma with their dedication and hard work.
We have been trying to keep these young student athletes occupied and well entertained throughout a time phase that I call the adjustment phase. Some of our freshmen have left the warmth of their home, family, coaches and friends, including boyfriends, to take on the unknown. They make these sacrifices to fulfill their dreams as a student athlete and in order to do so, they will have to endure physical, physiological, and intellectual challenges. In addition, they will have to face the pressure to be accepted by their peers. But in this short period we have been together. The administration, coaches, trainers, professors and their new teammates and friends have embraced the freshman class as the new members of the University of Oklahoma family.
I have traveled across the world and have found in Norman, Okla., some of the most generous, kind and heartfelt people I have ever met. This freshman class feels the same way as Brittney Koncak expresses below.
'I'm very excited to be here at OU. I feel at home here,' said Koncak. 'Our team is like a family and that makes myself and the other newcomers feel welcome. We have a strong team and a lot of potential this year.'
Building strength, creating goals, learning new skills and working on the basics have been the focus in the gym. Our coaching staff continues to mold practices around the talent and the training phases we are in. Creating high expectations daily, never settling for anything but the best is the team's philosophy. The demanding schedule of academics, the suggested two a day workouts, and social necessities are finally finding its place in the productive and busy life of the women's gymnastics team member.
By the way OU Football is still No. 1 and we are very proud to be Sooners! Stay tuned for our next release on the 3rd of October.
