Fayetteville, Ark. - Despite scoring the first five points to open the match, the Oklahoma Sooner volleyball team (5-3) was unable to score a victory Tuesday night against Arkansas (2-4), losing 3-0 to the Lady Razorbacks at Barnhill Arena. The two teams played to extra points in the first game before Arkansas went on to win 16-14, 15-9 and 15-11. Senior Cathy Cook paced the Sooners with a season-high 25 kills, while the Lady 'Backs' middle attack hurt OU with four players scoring double-digit kills. Fellow senior Holly McMillan led OU in hitting percentage with a .391 average, tallying 12 kills in 23 attempts and only three errors.
Cook landed her first four attempts to open the game and propelled the Sooners to an eventual 5-0 lead. The middle blocker registered 14 of her match-high 25 kills in the first game and finished the match hitting .364 (25k-5e-55ta). OU, with a 7-4 lead, held control of the game until Arkansas rattled off seven-straight points to take an 11-7 advantage. The Sooners rallied to climb back into the game and tied the score at 14 on a kill by freshman outside hitter Logan Pierce before the Lady 'Backs finished off with two-straight points to claim game one.
Arkansas controlled the ball most of the second game and capitalized on nine Oklahoma errors. Sophomore outside hitter Lindsay Hoyt recorded four kills in six attempts during game two to help supply the offensive effort for the Sooners, while also blocking three shots and assisting in a fourth.
OU and UA battled through five ties during game three before Arkansas pulled away by capturing five of the final six points to claim the game and win the match. Both teams struggled offensively during the final game as Oklahoma posted a .154 hitting percentage and Arkansas averaged .194.
The Sooners open Big 12 Conference play on Saturday night as OU travels to Boulder, Colo., to take on the University of Colorado. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CST) in the Coors Events/Conference Center.
