ARDMORE, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men’s golf team concluded The Maxwell at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, Okla., in seventh place Sunday. OU fired a final-round score of 276 (-4) using a tournament scoring format that takes the four best scores on each hole instead of the typical top four rounds.

Highlighting the Oklahoma final round was Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Jesse Schutte who fired a 3-under-par 67, vaulting to a 38th-place finish.

Final Results

Oklahoma State won the event as wire-to-wire victors after carding a final-round 262 (-18) at the 6,543-yard, par-70 layout.  The Cowboys finished the event a tournament-record 60-under-par, besting second-place Tulsa by seven shots and have taken home the tournament crown the last six years.

Senior Nick Sheedy paced the Sooners with rounds of 72, 70 and 71, placing 28th. A stroke back was fellow senior J.J. Wood who shot a final-round 71 for a 30th-place finish.

Rebounding from back-to-back 76s, Academic All-Big 12 honoree Phillip Bryan fired a final-round 70, finishing 56th.

Freshman Ben Blundell tied for 59th overall at 223 (+13) after an 81 on Sunday to round out the OU team scoring.

Three Sooners competed as individuals in the event and were led by freshman Tyler Rody who finished 36th in just his second collegiate event after a final-round 72.  Fellow freshman Eric Durbin stood 46th after shooting 74 on Sunday while Brandon Pelletier was 65th shooting 75.

Tulsa’s Nick Geyger holed out for eagle at the 18th to win medalist honors in the first playoff in Maxwell history.  Geyger bested OSU’s Ryan Posey who had stuck his approach shot within 18 inches before the hole-out on the first hole of sudden death. The two finished the final round at a tournament-record 15 under with Geyger shooting 64 to Posey’s 65 in the final round. Overnight leader Colt Knost followed up his course-record 9-under-par 61 on Saturday with a 71 on Sunday.

The Sooners return to the links Thursday in Sugar Grove, Ill., for the NCAA Central Regional.  Hosted by Northern Illinois, the 27-team field will play 54 holes at the Rich Harvest Farms Golf Course.
