NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma men’s tennis team (12-2) faces one regional opponent and two Big 12 foes this week. The Sooners will host Oral Roberts on Wed., March 24, at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. Action is set to begin at 2 p.m.
OU competes against No. 21 Texas A&M (13-6) on Sat., March 27, at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas, and then faces No. 28 Texas (10-6) on Sun., March 28, at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas. Action will begin at 1:30 on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both the Aggies and Longhorns are 2-0 in Big 12 play.
Series Record/Last Time
Oklahoma flew by Oral Roberts, 7-0, earlier this season in Tulsa, Okla. The Sooner men also defeated the Golden Eagles, 6-1 and 7-0, respectively, in the 2003 season. OU fell to No. 10 Texas A&M, 5-2, and then suffered a devastating loss to No. 17 Texas, 7-0, .last season.
Last Match Recap
OU was upset, 4-3, by first-time opponent William and Mary last week, but then turned around and easily swept George Mason, 7-0.
OU’s doubles continued to dominate as the Sooners won four of its six matches. In singles play, OU won nine of the twelve games, crushing GMU in all six matches. Overall, OU is 89-37 in singles play and 36-15 in doubles competition.
Newcomers Making Statements
Head coach Paul Lockwood knew what he was doing when he signed sophomore Lee Gregg (Altus, Okla.) and freshman Marek Velicka (Prerov, Czech Republic) to play for the Sooners. Velicka tops the team with a flawless 13-0 record, while Gregg (12-0) is also sporting perfect marks.
16-0 vs. Region V
OU has not lost a match to Region V opponents this season. The Sooners are 16-0 individually when facing regional teams. In addition, OU’s No. 2, 3 and 6 singles spots are undefeated at 11-0, 12-0 and 11-0, respectively.
OU Will Host 2004 Big 12 Championships
Oklahoma will host the 2004 Men’s and Women’s Big 12 Tennis Championships this spring at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. Tournament action begins Fri., April 30, and runs through Sun., May 2. Admission is $15 for the four-day tournament. An adult single session is $5 and a youth single session is $2.
