NORMAN, Okla. – The 39th-ranked Oklahoma women’s tennis team opens its 2011 season Sunday, Jan. 23, hosting Wichita State at 5 p.m., at the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion.

OU starts the season with their highest preseason ranking under head coach David Mullins.  The No. 39 ranking is the third-highest start in program history behind the 2005 team (No. 26) and the 2004 team (No. 35).

The Sooners look to build on last season's success and make it to their second-straight NCAA tournament.

OU ended the 2009-2010 season ranked No. 42 in the country after qualifying for its first NCAA tournament in six seasons.  The Sooners return six members of last season’s squad that became only the sixth team in program history to reach the NCAA tournament and only the seventh to record 18 wins in a season.

Headlining OU’s returnees is Senior Ana-Maria Constantinescu.  Constantinescu was the 2009 Big 12 Player of the Year and has earned All-Big 12 honors in all three of her seasons at OU.  OU also returns Tara Eckel and Maria Kalashnikova who led the team in singles records last season.

The Sooners add Mia Lancaster, Alice Radu and Whitney Ritchie to the 2011 team.  The incoming class is ranked No. 21 in the nation by the Tennis Recruiting Network and is arguably one of the best recruiting classes in program history.

Sooner duo, Constantinescu and Radu, are ranked No. 31 in doubles nationally to start the season.  Constantinescu and Radu won the 2010 Central Region double championship on Oct. 25 in Fayetteville, Ark.
