NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's golf team is in first place after first round action at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday. The Sooners finished out the first 18 holes with a team score of 277 (-11) at the ASU Karsten Golf Course (par-72, 7,037-yards). All five Sooner starters shot at or under par during the first round. San Diego State and TCU stand one shot behind Oklahoma going into second round play.

OU was led by junior Doug Manor (Garland, Texas), who fired a career-low 67 in the opening round and is currently tied for first place. Manor's previous career low was a 68, which he carded last fall at the Carpet Capital Classic in Rocky Face, Ga.

Two shots behind Manor is senior John Kidwell (Dallas, Texas), who carded an opening-round 69 (-3) and sits in a tie for ninth place. Junior Blake Martin (Stigler, Okla.) shot a first round 70 (-2) and is tied for 20th place going into the second round.

Rounding out the scoring for the Sooners was freshman Jim Renner (Plainville, Mass.) and junior Martin Flores (Mansfield, Texas), who shot first round scores of 71 and 72, respectively. Renner is tied for 34th place while Flores is tied for 52nd.

The Sooners begin second-round play Friday afternoon and final round action Saturday morning.
