Sooners Cruise By Nebraska, 71-51, In Big 12 First Round Game

Dallas, Texas - The Oklahoma women's basketball team picked up a 20-point victory over Nebraska, 71-51, in the opening round of the 2003 Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Tournament at Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas, Tuesday. OU improves to 19-11 overall, while Nebraska concludes its season at 8-20.

Senior Theresa Schuknecht produced her fifth double-double of the season and third in her last four games with 12 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes of action. Sophomore guard Dionnah Jackson lead the way with a game-high 14 points, followed by junior guard Maria Villarroel's 13. Combined, the guard duo shot 69 percent from the field, hitting 11 of 16 shots. Jackson nailed six of seven shots (86%) from the field and dished out a game-high tying five assists.

Oklahoma got solid production from its bench as sophomore Lauren Shoush distributed five assists, added four points and had two rebounds. Redshirt-freshman Antoinette Wadsworth played 19 minutes, one shy of a season high, scoring six points and grabbing six rebounds. Junior guard Stephanie Luce tied a career-high with two made three-pointers for six points. Freshman Laura Andrews hit her first three-pointer since netting two at Colorado in the second half. Andrews played six minutes and had one rebound, one assist, one steal and three points.

After a slow start, the Sooners tied the game at eight all at the 13:40 mark before outscoring the Cornhuskers 19-9 to take a 27-17 halftime advantage. Jackson scored eight of her 14 points in the opening 20 minutes, while Villarroel heated up after intermission scoring seven of the first nine points for the Sooners. Schuknecht, a 6-3 center, also caught fire on the offensive and defensive ends as she scored all of her points (12) and grabbed seven of her game-high 10 rebounds in the final 20 minutes.

Junior forward Alexa Johnson was the only Nebraska player in double digits in scoring with 11. Margaret Richards had a team-high eight rebounds, followed by Johnson's seven.

As a team, OU shot 46.9 percent from the field (30-64), 42.9 percent from the arc (6-14) and 83.3 percent from the free throw line (5-6). Nebraska connected on 32.8 percent from the field (19-58), hit only 26.7 percent from the arc (4-15) and 60 percent from the foul line (9-15). For the fourth straight game and eight of its last nine, OU has collected more total rebounds then its opponents, 44-34.

Oklahoma returns to action on Wednesday, March 12, at 2:30 p.m. to face No. 4 seed Colorado (21-6 overall, 11-5 Big 12) on Fox Sports Net.
