NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma women’s golf team posted an opening-round 302 Friday at the 17-team Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational and stands in an eighth-place tie.  OU’s Kendall Dye matched her season low with a one-under-par 71 and is tied for seventh place (one stroke out of first) at the 6,324-yard University of Texas Golf Course.

Dye, a senior from Edmond, Okla., birdied on the fifth and ninth holes and eagled  the 14th.

The Sooners are tied with Furman and are just three strokes behind seventh-place Duke and 10 shots out of the top five.  OU leads four teams ranked in the top 50 – No. 20 Arizona, No. 35 Texas A&M, No. 42 UCF and No. 46 South Carolina.

“We did many good things in playing smart and really struck the ball pretty consistently,” OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said.  “I was excited to see that we counted four scores in the 70’s, which really makes a difference.”

Sophomore Ellen Mueller stands three strokes behind Dye in 24th place and freshman Kelly Short fired a 78 and is tied for 58th place.  Junior Ryanne Elmer shot a 79 in her season debut while senior Staci Smoot carded an 80.

“Kendall and Ellen really played well and I was proud of Ryanne’s comeback on the back nine,” Ludvigson said.  “Staci should come back around tomorrow and I look to Kendall and Ellen to maintain their good golf."

“We need to stay smart into greens, picking the high percentage shots, and really concentrate on our speed on our lag putts.”

The Sooners start the second round on Saturday at 8:15 a.m. CT with live scoring available at
