NORMAN, Okla.-- The University of Oklahoma men’s tennis team will open its fall season Friday, Sept. 15 at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md.
Junior Federico Chavarria , junior Ryan Thomas and sophomore Sergey Avdeyev will be representing Oklahoma at the tournament, competing in both singles and doubles matches.
The tournament will be hosted at the USNA outdoor courts and the Severn Valley Tennis & Fitness Club indoor courts.
Joining the Sooners are Navy, Maryland, St. Joseph’s and Arkansas.
Oklahoma returns four letterwinners this season from last year’s 14-12 (1-6 in Big 12 play) team, including Big 12 first team selection Marek Velicka.
Head coach Paul Lockwood also returns this year for his 20th season with the Sooners.
The tournament will begin Friday at 1p.m. Individual times and results will be posted on www.SoonerSports.com as soon as they are available.

SENIOR MAREK VELICKA
Tallied an overall fall singles record of 6-2 ... went 6-1 in fall matches with teammate Alexei Ivanov and was ranked No. 20 in the country ... ranked No. 35 in the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings at the start of the fall season and climbed to No. 23 in the initial rankings released in January ... was the highest ranking of any Sooner in the preseason poll in the last 15 years ... won the ITA Central Region Doubles Championships with Ivanov ... competed in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships with Ivanov and advanced to the quarterfinals ... part of the first Sooner duo to advance to the indoor championships since 1991 ... tallied a 16-12 overall mark in singles and a 16-4 overall mark in doubles with Ivanov ... named to the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team ... selected to the All-Big 12 Singles Team and Doubles Team with Ivanov ... won the Big 12 No. 1 Doubles title with Ivanov.
JUNIOR FEDERICO CHAVARRIA
Did not compete in any singles matches during the fall season ... paired with Alexei Ivanov and Ryan Thomas for two matches and compiled an 0-2 record in the fall ... won the Big 12 No. 2 Doubles title with teammate Tommy Garrison ... duo recorded a 13-4 mark at the position and was 5-2 against regional opponents ... competed in two singles matches at the No. 5 spot and one at the No. 6 position ... was 3-0 in singles.
JUNIOR RYAN THOMAS
Competed in two singles matches and one doubles match in the fall and tallied an even 1-1 record in singles and a 0-1 record in doubles ... was 11-6 overall and 10-5 in spring singles matches ... went 8-5 in spring doubles matches with Matt Long.
SOPHOMORE SERGEY AVDEYEV
Did not compete in an singles or doubles mathces during the fall season...tailed an 11-11 singles record in the spring...went 2-5 in Big 12 duels and 3-4 against regional opponents...was 1-1 in spring doubles matches.
Lockwood Enters 20th Year with Sooners
For the past two decades Paul Lockwood has been the head coach for the OU men’s tennis program. A four year letterwinner at Oklahoma, Lockwood returned to coach at his alma matter. In his 20 years with the Sooners he has accumulated 282 wins, with an overall record of 282-179. Lockwood has produced 13 singles and eight doubles conference champions and received Big Eight Coach of the Year honors in 1991 and 1992.
