FORT WORTH, Texas - The 20th-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team (9-1) brought its win streak to seven after defeating No. 39 TCU Thursday, 6-1, at the Bayard H. Freidman Tennis Center.
The win over TCU marks the Sooners sixth win over an ITA top-50 team and matches OU's best start, 9-1, since the 2007 season.
"It was our first true road win of the year," OU head coach John Roddick said. "To go out and win the doubles point fairly convincingly and win five-out-of-six singles matches is a good day. I was really proud of our effort and focus today."
OU jumped on the Horned Frogs early after capturing the doubles portion of the match and the early, 1-0, lead.
Juniors David Pultr and Ionut Beleleu teamed up for the Sooners at the No. 2 position to handily defeated TCU's Slah Mbarek and Cameron Nash, 8-4.
At the No. 1 spot, senior Andrei Daescu teamed with freshman Costin Paval to claim the doubles point for the Sooners. The OU duo thrashed the Horned Frog's Emanuel Brighiu and Christopher Price, 8-2.
The Sooners continued their strong play into singles action. Pultr was the first Sooner to earn a point for OU after he defeated TCU's Goritzka in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
TCU came within one point, 2-1, after Brighiu beat sophomore George Chanturia. However, that was the closest the Horned Frogs would come to the Sooners as OU went on to win the remaining singles matches.
At the No. 1 position, Daescu defeated TCU's Mbarek, 6-1, 7-5.
Paval secured the victory for OU at the No. 3 position. Paval won his first set over TCU's Marius Cirstea, 7-5, but dropped his second set, 1-6. Paval remained poised in the third set as he won handily, 6-1.
OU freshman Lawrence Formentera rallied to take the second and third set, 6-3, 1-0, after dropping his first set to the Horned Frog's Price, 4-6.
Beleleu rounded out scoring for the Sooners after he trounced TCU's Nichols, 7-6, 6-3.
Next up, Oklahoma travels to Montgomery, Ala., to compete in the Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic, March 18-21. The field includes a plethora of ranked opponents including: No. 15 Texas Tech, No. 22 Fresno State, No. 31 Tulsa, No. 34 Arizona, No. 44 Notre Dame, No. 46 Penn State, No. 53 William & Mary, No. 66 Boise State and No. 69 OSU.
