The Sooners played the Fury '83 Club Team in their lone exhibition game last Friday at the OU Soccer Complex and came away with a 3-1 victory.
OU scored three goals within a 12-minute span in the second half after being down 1-0 at intermission. Sophomore Logan Womack scored two of those goals while junior Shannon Wing tallied the other.
"This was a great game to get in," said OU Head Coach Randy Evans. "We showed signs of a verteran team by playing through some adversity and adjusting at halftime."
OU On Paper
The Sooners return 19 letterwinners and nine starters from a 2000 campaign that produced the best record in school history (10-9-1) as well their first ever trip to the Big 12 Tournament.
Some of the key returnees for OU include sophomore Logan Womack, a Big 12 second and all-newcomer team selection, and senior Jonette Coquat, the Sooners' all-time leading scorer.
Oklahoma also welcomes back all but one starter (Bridgette Smith) on a defense that produced the lowest single-season goals-against average in school history (1.00).
Big 12 Comparisons
Oklahoma was picked fourth in the Big 12 Preseason Coaches Poll, a considerable jump from last year's 10 spot in the conference preseason rankings.
OU was also selected No. 7 in the Soccer Buzz central region poll that follows up its ninth-place regional ranking at the end of 2000.
The strength of the Big 12 is shown in the conference's top three choices in 2001: Nebraska, Texas A&M and Texas, respectively. The three schools are 1-2-3 in the region poll as well. Also, the Huskers (fifth), Aggies (11th) and Longhorns (20th) are ranked in the NCSAA/adidas national preseason poll.
Texas Christian, like OU, finished 10-9-1 in 2000 and its last season in the WAC produced a 5-2 mark, good for a second-place tie. This year, the Horned Frogs will debut in Conference USA.
The series between Oklahoma and TCU is tied at two after the Sooners' 2-1 victory on Sept. 17, 2000, in Norman.
Junior Shannon Wing's effort in the OU triumph (one goal, one assist) helped her land Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors.
The Horned Frogs won their lone exhibition game, 1-0, over Oklahoma State in Fort Worth on Sunday.
In its debut in the Conference USA preseason poll, TCU was picked sixth (out of 14 teams). Junior forward Sherry Dick was the Horned Frogs' lone first-team all-conference preseason selection.
The Sooners are 1-4 all-time in their first game of the season. The lone win came Sept. 1, 1998, at Tulsa (6-2).
Senior Jonette Coquat, in her Oklahoma debut, scored two goals and added an assist in the victory over the Golden Hurricane.
Tulsa defeated OU in last season's season opener, 2-0, on Aug. 25, in Edmond.
