NORMAN, Okla. The reigning Big 12 Champion Oklahoma men’s golf squad returns to action Monday morning at the 30th annual USC Collegiate Invitational, held in Westlake Village, Calif., on the par-71, 6,900-yard North Ranch Country Club course.
The 15-team field, featuring five teams ranked in Golf World’s latest top-15 rankings, will play 36 holes Monday and return for the final round of action on Tuesday. Play begins with a 9:30 a.m. (CST) shotgun start on Monday and at 9:15 a.m. (CST) off the 1st and 10th tees for Tuesday.
Competing in the event is Golf World’s second-ranked squad in Stanford, No. 6 Coastal Carolina, No. 7 UCLA, No. 8 USC and No. 13 BYU. Rounding out the field are California, Loyola Marymount, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, TCU, Tennessee, Texas Tech and Washington State.
The Sooner lineup will feature seniors Nick Sheedy and J.J. Wood, junior Phillip Bryan and freshmen Ben Blundell and Jesse Schutte. Sheedy is the lone Oklahoma player making the trip to California who did not compete in last month’s UH-Hilo Intercollegiate. The Burlington, Iowa, native competed in two fall tournaments for the Sooners. Wood, a Pepperdine transfer, placed 10th for the Waves last season in this event as they won the team title. The Yuma, Ariz., native carded rounds of 73, 74 and 69.
“Once again, we will be competing against some of the best teams in the country,” said OU head coach Jim Ragan. “We need to put three solid rounds together and build some momentum heading into the brunt of our spring schedule.”
Former Sooner standout Anthony Kim won the individual title at last year’s tournament, formerly known at the Ashworth Collegiate Invitational, with a three-round total of 204 (-9). Other notable former winners include Corey Pavin (1978, 1981), Billy Mayfair (1987), Tiger Woods (1996), Jason Gore (1997) and Paul Casey (1998).
