NORMAN, Okla. - recently caught up with sophomore Andrei Daescu of the men's tennis team to see how school is going and to find out what he is doing to get ready for the fall portion of the tennis schedule.

Daescu is a native of Bucharest, Romania, and is one of two sophomores on this year's squad.

Daescu competed in the Baylor Intercollegiate last weekend in Waco, Texas, with teammate Rob McKenzie.  Daescu won his first-round and second-round matches before being eliminated in round three.  Daescu and McKenzie teamed up in doubles competition and made it to the semifinals.

Friday, selected members of the team will compete in the ITA All-American Pre-Qualifying tournament in Tulsa, Okla.

Daescu talks about the music rotation on his iPod, his favorite thing about Norman and what other sports he enjoys besides tennis:

SS:  What did you do doing the summer to sharpen your game?
AD:  I really focused on the technical part of my game and practiced as much as possible.  I tried to simulate a real match during every practice so that I had that feeling of it being a real match.

SS:  What are you doing with any of your free time now that you are back in school?
AD:  I am very busy with school and practice so, when I do have free time, I try to use it wisely and get caught up with school or try to get an extra practice in.
SS:  What personal goals do you have between now and the first official practice of the season?
AD:  I want to make sure I am in shape, because if I am not in shape I will not be able to improve the way I expect to.
SS:  What kind of workouts do you do to keep yourself in tennis shape?
AD:  I always try to get a good cardio workout in because of its importance.  But I also lift weights to make sure I am physically and mentally strong.
SS:  How have the first month of classes been going?
AD:  Class has been challenging and fun.  It keeps me busy but that is a positive.
SS:  What kind of music do you listen to?
AD:  I love disco.  But I also enjoy rock and rap.
SS:  What artists are in heavy rotation on your iPod?
AD:  Linkin Park, Eminem and DY's.
SS:  Who is the biggest tennis celebrity you have met?
AD:  Ilie Nastase.
SS:  If you weren't playing tennis, what would you play?
AD:  I would definitely be playing soccer because in my opinion it's the best sport in the world.  I am a huge soccer fan as well.
SS:  Do you watch any other sports?
AD:  I obviously love to watch soccer but I also really enjoy basketball.
SS:  What TV shows do you watch regularly?
AD:  I am not a fan of watching TV, so I really don't watch it at all.
SS:  Why did you choose OU?
AD:  Because the tradition is so rich and long standing.  The academics are also outstanding.
SS:  What is your favorite thing about Norman?  Oklahoma?
AD:  Norman is such a peaceful quiet town.  The thing I like most about it is that it is a small town but has all of the amenities and things you would find in a big city.
