DALLAS, Texas -- The 19th-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team shot a final round 286 to finish in fourth place at the 13th-annual Red River Shootout in Dallas, Texas, at the Dallas Athletic Club.
"I'm really happy with our team performance today," said Oklahoma Head Coach Jim Ragan. "We shot one of the lowest rounds of the day. We were one of three teams to shoot under par and I felt our guys played with a lot of confidence in fairly tough conditions for this golf course. We just need to keep working hard to try to get better."
The Sooners finished nine shots behind tournament champion USC. Capturing the tournament's individual title was USC's Hunter Mahan.
"I kind of got off to a slow start but I picked up my game in the second round and that carried over today," said Mahan. "I just tried to play smart, hit solid shots and not hurt myself."
Said USC Head Coach Kurt Schuette, "We had a chance to last week in Chicago. We had the lead going into that last round and couldn't quite get it done so I think that experience helped us bounce back and take care of business."
Leading the way for OU was junior Cody Freeman (73-71-68=212) who tied for 11th with sophomore John Kidwell (73-67-72=212), who competed as an individual. The Oklahoma pair finished two under par.
"Cody Freeman hit the ball very well today," said Ragan. "He missed a few putts but he didn't get down about it. He really led our team to what I think was an outstanding finish today."
Rounding out the scores for the Sooners' starting five were sophomore Matt Cohn (70-69-76=215) who finished in 20th place, while junior J.D. Robertson (76-70-74=220) and freshman Martin Flores (76-74-70=220) tied for 39th. Flores fired his lowest round of the season (70) on the final day.
Also playing as individuals for Oklahoma were sophomore Parker Foster (68-71-77=216) who placed 23rd and sophomore Chris Cureton who carded a 74-69-77=220 for a 39th-place finish.
OU finishes up its fall season on Oct. 15-16 in Durham, N.C., where they will be competing in the Duke Golf Classic.
