NORMAN, Okla. – The 20th-ranked Oklahoma men’s tennis team travels to Austin, Texas, to compete in the 2010 Big 12 Championships from April 30 to May 2. The Sooners are pitted against No. 15 Texas Tech in first round action Friday, April 30 at 9 a.m.

Oklahoma (16-6, 2-4) earned the fifth seed after dismantling Nebraska, 6-1, to close out the regular season and will face Texas Tech (20-4, 3-3), the fifth seed, for the third time this season.

Earlier in the year, OU lost a heartbreaker to the Red Raiders in the finals of the Blue-Gray Tennis Classic, 4-3. The Sooners looked to even the score when they hosted TT in April, but the Red Raiders got the better of the Sooners, 5-2.

OU and Tech have only faced each other once at the Big 12 Championships with Red Raiders claiming the 4-1 win. Since the inception of the Big 12 OU holds a 2-13 record in Big 12 Championship history.

On the year, OU has defeated 12 teams ranked in the ITA top-72, while each of the Sooners' losses has come against teams ranked in the ITA top 15. In addition, the Sooners have defeated San Diego State (No. 55) and OSU (No. 49) twice this season.

The Sooners are led by a trio of ranked individuals including: 27th-ranked Andrei Daescu, No. 66-ranked Ionut Beleleu (13-7) and No. 74 Costin Paval (16-4). In doubles, OU has two ranked tandems in No. 19 Daescu and Paval (9-6) and 62nd-ranked Daescu and Beleleu. Daescu and Paval have defeated three pairs ranked in the top-30 and a total of five in the top 62.

The Red Raiders enter Friday’s showdown coming off their best season in school history, which includes 17 wins over ranked teams, five of which were in the top 30.

The winner of the Friday’s match plays the No. 1 seed and third-ranked Texas on Saturday, May 1 at 12 p.m.
