NORMAN, Okla. - The 12th-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the OU Softball Complex. The Sooners (38-10, 12-3 Big 12) drew a season-high 10 walks and recorded six hits en route to their sixth straight victory. The Jayhawks fell to 19-31 overall and 1-14 in conference play.
Freshman Keilani Ricketts (24-8) got the win, throwing her 21st complete game and 10th shutout of the season. Ricketts allowed just two hits, a two-out one in the seventh and struck out nine batters. She moved her strikeout total to 251 on the year, eight shy of tying Lauren Eckermann (2007) for fifth on the OU single season list in the category.
After two scoreless innings, the Sooners stuck first plating two runs in the bottom of the third. The inning led off with a walk by Amber Flores and a single by Jessica Shults. Evan Sallis entered the game to pinch run for Shults, later advancing to second on her eighth stolen base of the season.
Haley Nix pushed the first run across the board with an RBI fielder's choice with no out recorded. Nix later stole second while Ricketts drew a walk to load the bases. Katie Norris increased the lead to 2-0 on a one-out RBI ground out.
On the day, Oklahoma recorded six hits. Shults led the way for the Sooners going 2-for-4 with two hard hit singles. Flores drew four walks in all four at bats in the game. It was the first time Flores reached safely in every at-bat via the walk since March 1, 2009 when Creighton walked her in all four at-bats, as well.
Brianna Turang, Haley Anderson, Lindsey Vandever and Ricketts each added a hit in the contest.
Oklahoma closes out the 2010 regular season home schedule tomorrow against the Jayhawks. First pitch is set for noon CT at the OU Softball Complex.
