NORMAN, Okla. -- Lynette Velazquez, a senior first baseman on the ninth-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team, hit two home runs in the Sooners' 6-2 victory at Oklahoma State last Friday to help OU clinch the Big 12 regular season title and was named Big 12 Player of the Week today. It was the third player-of-the-week honor this year for the Huntington Beach, Calif., native.
Velazquez ranks third in the conference with her .403 batting average and leads the league in home runs (18), runs batted in (59) and slugging percentage (.822). She also boasts a sparkling .995 fielding percentage. Velazquez's 18 homers broke the OU single-season record of 17 set by Casey Dickson two years ago. She needs three more RBIs to break that school single-season mark as well (Dickson drove in 61 runs in 1997).
Missouri sophomore Stephanie Falk tossed a pair of shutouts against Nebraska over the weekend and was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week. She is 23-9 on the year and owns a 0.99 earned run average.
The University of Oklahoma will host the 1999 Big 12 Softball Tournament May 12-15 at Don E. Porter ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. The top-seeded Sooners, who are 38-12 overall and finished 12-3 in conference action, play their first game on Thursday, May 13, at 10 a.m. The tournament's championship game will start at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 15.
