NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma opened up the offense against TCU on Senior Day, winning 3-1 at John Crain Field on Sunday.
The win was the Sooners second Big 12 victory of the weekend after beating Kansas 1-0 on Friday. OU is now 6-7-4 overall and 2-2-2 in Big 12 play.
Well, obviously in the first half we wanted to do well for the seniors today and I thought we came out a little bit hesitant," said Oklahoma head coach Matt Potter. "In the second half we settled down and started to play a little bit more and got our just reward."
Seniors Renae Cuellar and Jessica Johnson were joined by sophomore Emily Bowman as goalscorers for OU, which posted the game's first three goals before TCU added a late score with less than nine minutes left in the game.
OU senior goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire recorded the first assist of her career in 78 games played. Abby Hodgen added another assist for the Sooners, her first of the year.
"The fact that two seniors got on the board and another senior assisted, that just speaks to how happy I am for them," Potter said.
Sophomore Emily Bowman scored her first goal of the season on a header in the 32nd minute to put OU on the board in the first half. Hodgen sent a ball right directly in front of the box from five yards out where Bowman put her head on the ball just before the TCU keeper could get there, directing the pass into the goal.
The goal was the second in Bowman's career and came after the midfielder assisted on Renae Cuellar's game-winner in OU's 1-0 win against Kansas on Friday.
Midway through the second half, senior goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire and Cuellar combined to make their Senior Day memorable. Devonshire's pass from the OU box found Cuellar down the left sideline. Cuellar took the TCU defender inside, then fired a low shot into the left corner of the net, scoring her 11th goal of the season.
Johnson added an insurance goal late on a shot from almost 40 yards out from the right, crossing a ball over the Horned Frog keeper's head and catching the inside corner of the net for her first goal since the 2009 season.
Seniors Cuellar, Devonshire and Johnson joined Alison Farrell, Kali Fournier, Katharine Nutman and Brianna Turang in being honored before their final game at John Crain Field.
Oklahoma will next play at West Virginia on Thursday, October 18, at 6 p.m. CT in the only game of the weekend for the Sooners. The game will be televised live by FOX Soccer.
