IRVING, Texas -- University of Oklahoma senior gymnast Jackie Flanery was named Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week, announced by the conference office Monday afternoon. Flanery posted event wins on bars and floor in OU’s upset victory over No. 4 Florida in the 2010 season opener on Jan. 8 in Norman.
It’s the second time in Flanery’s career that she has received the honor and first since the 2008 season.
Flanery posted a career-high 9.85 on bars in her first routine on the apparatus since the 2008 season, sharing the bars title with teammates Hollie Vise and Natasha Kelley against a Gators squad that closed the 2009 season ranked No. 3 in the country on the event.
The Plattsburg, Mo., native sealed the season-opening win with a 9.875 on floor from the anchor position, as OU’s victory over the Gators marked the highest-ranked opponent that Oklahoma has toppled under fourth-year head coach K.J. Kindler.
Flanery also started the Sooners off strong on vault, with a score of 9.8 in OU’s opening routine on the apparatus. The senior gymnast has led OU to its highest ranking in program history, as the Sooners were ranked No. 2 in the country in the Troester rankings released on Jan. 11.
Flanery is tied nationally at No. 7 on floor and stands ninth on bars in the latest individual rankings.
Missouri’s Mary Burke was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week. Burke captured the first all-around title of her collegiate career with a score of 39.200 while leading No. 16 Missouri to a 194.725-190.650 win against No. 18 Ohio State over the weekend.
Oklahoma (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) returns to action against ninth-ranked Auburn (0-1, 0-1 SEC) on Friday at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum in Auburn, Ala., at 7 p.m. (CT).
