Eight Women Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

NORMAN, Okla. – Eight University of Oklahoma women’s track and field student-athletes were named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic team the organization announced today. Brittany Borman, Kelsey Brown, Jesica Ejesieme, Jessica Engel, Kelsey Poljansek, Kristen Rice, Karen Shump and Sherine Wells were all named to the team after top performances on and off the track throughout the 2011 season.

Six of the women earned Academic All-Big 12 honors earlier this season, while Borman was recognized on the Capital One Academic All-District® Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Engel, Shump and Wells were honored as a second team selection.

Borman became Oklahoma’s 34th NCAA champion and first in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 178-2 (54.32). Borman also became the first athlete in Big 12 history to win the conference’s discus and javelin titles in the same year. Borman defended her discus title with a throw of 180-6 (55.02) and won the second straight javelin title for the Sooners with a throw of 163-8 (49.90). Borman also earned all-conference honors in the indoor shot put after finishing eighth with a throw of 50-8.25 (15.45).

Brown earned All-Big 12 honors with an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run, clocking a time of 2:09.38, while Ejesieme earned indoor and outdoor All-Big 12 honors as a member of the 4x400-meter relay.

Engel, the 2011 Big 12 10,000-meter run champion, earned second team All-America honors in the event while earning outdoor all-conference honors in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs and indoor honors in the 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs.

Poljansek finished in the top five in throws events on four different occasions this year. Rice set personal records in both the indoor and outdoor high jump this year, finishing fourth at the Big 12 indoor meet and third at the outdoor meet.

Shump was the Big 12 indoor shot put champion this year, earned all-conference honors in the event. She was a second team All-American in the outdoor shot put and earned All-Big 12 accolades in the shot put and discus throw this year.

A second team All-American as a member of the 4x100-meter relay, Wells was a three-time All-Big 12 outdoor honoree this past year (100-meter dash and 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).

The Big 12 Conference earned 95 plaudits to lead the league category by a wide margin.
