NORMAN, Okla. Two Sooner golfers, Anthony Kim and Jesse Schutte, stand near the top of the leaderboard after Monday’s opening round of stroke play competition at the U.S. Amateur Public Links in Bremerton, Wash.
Kim and Schutte each carded rounds of 1-under-par 71 at the 7,061-yard Gold Mountain Golf Club to tie for 11th place.
Kim, a three-time All-American at OU, was the medalist at last year’s Publinx after winning the stroke play portion of the event.
Schutte, an incoming freshman, was a highly touted high school golfer, winning three consecutive Oregon 3A state individual titles at Siuslaw High School.
Brodie Flanders, a senior on the Sooners’ 2006 Big 12 Championship squad, fired a 2-over 74 and stands in a tie for 39th.
Mustang, Okla., native Phillip Bryan is tied for 69th with a 76 (+4), and junior Nick Sheedy turned in an 83 to tie for 144th at 11-over-par.
The APL field will play the final 18 holes of stroke play on Tuesday, with the top 64 players advancing to match play.
