NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's soccer team shut out Northern Arizona, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in Flagstaff, Ariz., in front of 419 fans. The win moved OU to 4-1 on the season while the Lumberjacks fell to 2-2.
The Sooners jumped ahead early after sophomore Logan Womack, at 9:55, scored on a rebound after her initial shot was blocked. The goal was Womack's fifth in as many games this year.
The game remained 1-0 until the 78th minute of action when freshman Christi Basgall tallied her first career goal. Basgall was assisted by junior Shannon Wing, her third of the season. Oklahoma scored again with just 46 seconds left in the match. Sophomore Heidi Martinson made it 3-0 on her first goal of the year. The score was unassisted.
Jana Cunningham and Catherine Wade combined on the shutout for the second time in 2001. Cunningham and Wade registered five and six saves, respectively. The Sooners have posted shutouts in four of their first five games this season.
"With all that's happened, I was extremely pleased with the outcome," said Head Coach Randy Evans. "A couple of injuries to our starters made us a little disorganized, but we regrouped and played better in the second half."
A total of $1,022.17 in donations were generated at the match for the American Red Cross to help all those affected by the tragedies in New York City and Washington. The match started with a moment of silence and both teams lined up at midfield holding hands as the United States National Anthem played.
Oklahoma returns home for consecutive games. The Sooners meet Southwest Missouri State on Friday and Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. Both games will start at 7:30 p.m.
