Sept. 26, 2002
Baylor
Friday's loss to SMU snapped an eight-game home winning streak for the Bears.
Baylor's last defeat in Waco was a 2-0 loss to then-No. 17 Texas on Oct. 5, 2001.
The team is 11-3 at home over the past season and a half. In eight games, the
Bears have out shot their opponents by a combined total of 160-55. At 6-2, the
Bears have tied the team's best start under head coach Nick Cowell. Baylor's 5-0
start tied the school record for consecutive wins to start a season, matching
a mark set in 1996 and tied in 1998.
Colorado
Colorado improves to 4-3 overall with a 4-1 win over Eastern Illinois and 3-2
victory over Maine to claim its own Colorado Soccer Classic title and end a three-game
skid. The Buffs' four goals netted on Friday tied a school record and marked just
the fifth time Colorado had gained that much offense in a game, first since the
1998 season and their three-goal advantage at the end of regulation was the most
breathing room a CU team has had since a 3-0 blanking of Alabama-Birmingham in
'99. With the win over Maine, Colorado has already bettered last year's win column
with four on the season. The Buffs' seven goals, from six different players, over
the weekend is the most in a single weekend in the program's history.
Iowa State
Iowa State finished 0-1-1 at the UMass Classic, falling to Massachusetts 1-0 and
tying Fairfield 1-1. Iowa State out shot UMass and Fairfield by a combined count
of 60-23 at the UMass Classic. This season ISU is averaging 18.0 shots per game
to its opponents' 9.6. ISU has been out scored 9-8 in 2002. The Cyclones' 35 shots
against Fairfield were the most by Iowa State since a school record 37-shot effort
in a 9-1 victory over Kent State on Oct. 31, 1997. ISU also fired 37 attempts
in an 8-0 win over Western Illinois on Oct. 10, 1997. The 35 shots against Fairfield
ranks third in ISU history.
Kansas
KU soccer defeated Evansville, 2-0, last Thursday and Oakland, 1-0, on Saturday
to win the PreRehab Aces Soccer Classic, hosted by Evansville. For their efforts,
four Jayhawks: Meghan Miller, Lauren Williams, Holly Ryder and Caroline Smith
were named to the All-Tournament team. Miller was named Defensive MVP as she did
not allow a goal in two games while notching 11 saves. KU's 6-1-1 record is the
best start in the program's history. The Jayhawks are currently in the midst of
a five-game winning streak, with all the wins coming on the road. KU has shutout
its last three opponents. Freshman Caroline Smith has scored a point in KU's last
four games. Sophomore Rachel Gilfillan's three goals this season put her in a
tie for fouth place for most career goals at KU. Miller now has a .83 GAA this
season and 1.23 career average. The Jayhawks are looking for their first win against
Nebraska as they are 0-8 against the Cornhuskers.
Missouri
The Tigers are 5-2-1, including a Missouri record four overtime games in a single
season. The Tigers are consequently 2-2 in overtime, taking both of their season
losses in sudden-death play. Mizzou scored three goals within a five minute span
to shut down 2001 SEC Western Division Champion Mississippi State. Shea Swoboda,
Missy Peabody and Karen Bauer each tallied a goal for Missouri. Goalkeeper Megan
Duncan is 5-2-1 on the year playing 787 minutes. She has played four overtime
games, allowed nine goals and made 50 saves for a 1.03 goals against average.
She also owns two shutout victories. Freshman Jennifer Nobis scored her first
collegiate goal against Mississippi. After leading the freshman class in shot
attempts throughout the year, Nobis finally found the net scoring the game-tying
goal on an assist by Missy Peabody.
Nebraska
The Nebraska soccer team wrapped up the week with a 2-0-1 record. Christine Latham
scored the game-winning goal in a 4-0 victory over Drake Tuesday night. Sophomore
Jenna Cooper added two assists in the game on Latham's goal as well as a score
by Breanna Boyd. Lindsey Ingram contributed her first goal of the season against
the Bulldogs and Drake put in a goal for the Huskers to wrap up the team scoring.
The Huskers tied in-state foe Creighton, Friday night, 1-1. Freshman forward Nikki
Baker scored her first collegiate goal to put Nebraska up 1-0 early in the second
half. Outstanding play by Creighton's goalkeeper kept the Huskers from scoring
the rest of the game, despite getting off 17 shots. In the Huskers' third game
in six days, NU defeated Indiana State 2-0, scoring both goals in the first half.
Cooper put in her first career goal for the Huskers to give them the win. Latham
also scored her fourth goal of the season to put the Huskers up 2-0. Nebraska
travels to Missouri and Kansas this weekend to open Big 12 Conference play.
Oklahoma
Oklahoma failed to score against two of the top teams in the country and suffered
consecutive shutouts at the Stanford Nike Invitational this weekend. No. 2 Stanford
defeated OU, 4-0, on Friday night and defending national champion and No. 10-ranked
Santa Clara blanked the Sooners by a 4-0 score on Sunday. "We learned that you
can't get away with making mistakes at this level," said head coach Randy Evans.
"It was great for us to experience the speed displayed by some of the top teams
in the country. This will really help us now that we are set to begin Big 12 play.
Again, we can take a lot of confidence away from our performance this weekend."
Oklahoma returns to Norman to open conference play against Baylor at John Crain
Field on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
Oklahoma State
At 8-0, Oklahoma State has matched its win total from one year ago and enters
the first week of conference play undefeated for the first time in program history.
Last week the Cowgirls defeated Northeastern State and Drury at home, both by
a 2-0 score. In the win over Drury on Sunday, two Cowgirls registered their first
goal of the season. Sophomore Leah Carr scored the game winner and junior Joanne
Edwards added an insurance goal nine minutes later. Senior goalkeeper Kat Doud
picked up a shutout in both contests last week to up her career total to 12 and
give her sole possession of the top spot in the record books.
Texas
With their two wins this past week, the Longhorns have opened the 2002 season
with four straight wins at home - three of which have been shutouts. On the strength
of back-to-back shutouts opposite Vanderbilt and Rice, the Texas defense has not
allowed a goal since the 52nd minute of its match against No. 1 North Carolina
on Sept. 15 (a span of 218 minutes and two seconds). Of note, UT has allowed only
six goals through seven matches - which is the second fewest scores allowed to
date among Big 12 teams. The Longhorns' backfield has accounted for six points
over the last six matches with two assists from Laura Kram and a pair of goals
from Michelle Wickwire. Texas ranks second in the Big 12 in points scored (59)
and first in assists (23), while having its three top point scorers (Kelly McDonald,
Kati McBain & Kylee Wosnuk) rank among the top 10 league point leaders. Both UT
goalkeepers posted shutouts over the past week as Darci Carruthers went the distance
against Vanderbilt and Alex Gagarin turned the trick opposite Rice. Texas' 7-0
win over Rice saw seven different UT players tally goals and marked the Longhorns'
largest goal output for a single game since a 9-0 victory over Oklahoma on Sept.
26, 1997, in Austin. Sophomore Kelly McDonald set individual-game career bests
for points (5) and assists (3) during UT's 7-0 triumph over Rice.
Texas A&M
Of the six matches this season, A&M has played four nationally-ranked opponents
and has a record of 1-3 against them. All three of the losses were outside the
friendly confines of the Aggie Soccer Complex. In all but one match this season
the Aggies have allowed one goal or fewer. The only exception was against No.
1 North Carolina when the Tar Heels scored four times. 35 of A&M's 56 points this
season have come from a freshman or sophomore. That is not hard to believe when
you realize that 16 of the 23 players on the roster are freshmen or sophomores.
Senior midfielder Heather Ragsdale is on fire. Ragsdale missed the first four
matches of the season due to injury but has been impressive in the four matches
she has played in with two goals and three assists. The A&M defense has been outstanding
the last three matches. Last weekend, the Aggie back line allowed just five shots
in wins over Florida Atlantic and Idaho State. In the last three matches Texas
A&M has out shot its opponents, 84-13. For the season, the A&M defense has allowed
just 8.375 shots per game and only 4.5 shots on goal per contest.
Texas Tech
The six game losing streak ties the longest in school history. Texas Tech also
lost six straight matches during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. The Red Raiders have
scored nine goals this season and have only one player (Catie Arsenault) with
more than one goal this season. The Red Raiders also have three players (Frilot,
Campbell, Arsenault) tied for the team lead in points with four. For the third
year in a row, the Red Raiders have only two wins before starting conference play.
Texas Tech has been out shot 64 to 41 in the second half of games this season.
TTU has played eight freshmen in matches this season.
