NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's soccer team notched its first Big 12 victory of the season as it defeated Missouri, 2-1, Sunday in front of 627 fans in Columbia. The win evened the Sooners mark in the conference at 1-1 and improved their overall record to 7-2. The Tigers fell to 6-2 and 1-1 in the Big 12. The win was Oklahoma's first ever against the Tigers.
"This win was huge," said OU Head Coach Randy Evans. "We played a tremendous game defensively, particulary Jessica Volcansek. When they scored to make it 2-1, the momentum shifted, but our defense did a great job holding up. Logan's (Womack) goal early in the game was key, giving us confidence."
Sophomore Logan Womack put OU ahead early with the game's first goal just 4:38 into the game. The Norman native dribbled through the defense before scoring her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Womack has scored a goal in every Sooner win this year and tied the school record for number of goals in a season with Heather Morrison (eight in 1997).
Oklahoma made it 2-0 when junior Heather Martinelli scored off a short pass from Womack in the 57th minute. The Tigers trimmed the lead to one at 60:50 on a goal by Melissa McLellan but OU was able to hold on from there.
Catherine Wade (4-1) picked up the victory while stopping three Missouri shots.
Oklahoma hosts a pair of conference games next weekend against Texas Tech (Friday at 7 p.m.) and Colorado (Sunday at 1 p.m.).
