WACO, Texas The No. 10 seed University of Oklahoma women’s tennis team fell 4-0 to seventh-seeded Kansas State on Thursday in the first round of the Big 12 Tennis Championships, held in Waco, Texas.

The Wildcats came out strong by winning the doubles point and won the first three singles matches to clinch the victory. The Sooners also lost in the first round to Kansas State last year.

In doubles, Kansas State won at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. Sophomores Christi Baxley and Chelsea Orr, who had not teamed up this spring until this match, fell to Tamar Kvarastskhelia and Maria Perevoschikova, 8-4, at the No. 2 spot.
Juniors Anne Carter and Monica Purice followed with an 8-2 loss at No. 3 against Fernanda Da Valle and Olga Klimova. Because Kansas State had already clinched the doubles point, the match at No. 1 against sophomore Gabby Baker and junior Irina Lykina and the Wildcats’ Jessica Simosa and Katka Kudlackova was suspended.

The Sooners could not rebound in singles and lost the three matches at the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 slots. The match at No. 5 against Orr and Kudlackova was the first to finish with Kudlackova taking a, 6-3, 6-2, victory. Carter was the next to fall at No. 6, where she was defeated by Klimova, 6-2, 7-5.

Rounding out singles competition at No. 4 were Baxley and Da Valle. Baxley also lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Because the match had already been decided, Baker, Lykina and Purice did not finish their matches.

The Sooners will now have to wait until Wednesday, May 3, to see if they will receive a bid to the NCAA Team Championships. The women’s selection announcements will air at 8:45 p.m. Eastern time on ESPNEWS.
