NORMAN, Okla. - The OU women’s gymnastics squad remained at No. 2 in Monday's week two Troester rankings after its victory at ninth-ranked Auburn last Friday, but gained ground on top-ranked UCLA. The Sooners hold a season average of 196.275, less than a tenth of a point from the Bruins (196.362).
Oklahoma has been one of the most consistent teams in the country during the first two weeks of competition, hitting 47-of-48 routines en route to back-to-back wins over top-10 opponents.
The early success can be attributed to stellar performances on bars and beam, where the Sooners are currently ranked first in the country on each apparatus. OU’s season average on the uneven bars is a 49.200, while the beam squad has posted a mark of 49.025 through two events. OU is a perfect 24-of-24 on these two events heading into the third week of competition.
Individually, Hollie Vise holds top-five national rankings on bars (No. 4 - 9.887) and beam (No. 2 - 9.887), while Megan Ferguson is ranked fourth on beam (9.875).
Oklahoma continues its current three-meet road stand at No. 25 Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 23. The top-25 battle commences at 7 p.m. (CT) inside Huff Hall in the Fighting Illini’s home opener.
Every Monday throughout the season, senior gymnast Kristin Smith will give OU gymnastics fans an inside glimpse into the Sooner program with weekly recaps, meet previews and insight into life outside of the gym for the reigning Big 12 Champions. This week's installment focuses on OU's wins over Florida and Auburn, and the great fan support surrounding the program.
WEEK 2 | JAN. 18, 2010
Hey Sooner Fans!
Wow, I don’t even know where to begin. Our lives have been so crazy these last two weeks. We started our season off at home, which was a first for us. We gathered as a team the night before at Jackie’s house and had a wonderful pre-meet meal while we watched the National Championship game. Unfortunately we couldn’t watch the Sooners play, but that’s all right, we’ll be right back in the hunt next year after a great bowl win against Stanford!
We started off with a home win against the University of Florida. That was one of the most exciting meets we have ever had. Hats off to the fans, ya’ll were awesome! We accomplished one of our many goals for the season and we look forward to the coming meets ahead.
After Florida, we regained focus and started preparing for Auburn. We made lots of new progress in our new gym, which I must add, is state-of-the-art. We are so lucky to have this new facility and a special thanks to everyone who helped with the process. We greatly appreciate it!
The trip to Auburn was a lot of fun. We started out with a team meal at the hotel after arriving at the resort that evening. Friday we did a little shopping at a local mall and enjoyed a nice lunch at a fun restaurant on campus. The meet went really well and we were very excited to start off our road schedule with a win. We were really excited to have some family members and friends traveling to Alabama. The support is always appreciated. We definitely have the greatest fans ever. Overall the trip went great, much improved from our previous road trips that have ended with cancelled flights due to weather, flight delays and all sorts of crazy stuff.
We were back in the gym Sunday with focus on our meet this weekend at the University of Illinois and the much anticipated first day of school on Tuesday. Time to get organized again. We are really excited about our trip this weekend, we are going to have a lot of family members there!
I look forward to keeping you guys updated throughout the year. Thanks for all the support and BOOMER SOONER!!
