NORMAN, Okla. — After an opening weekend of the outdoor season that saw just two athletes compete for Oklahoma, 33 athletes take to the track and to the field this weekend with action at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., and the North Texas Invite in Denton, Texas. OU will be represented by a lone runner in Rob Sorrell in California while 19 events in Texas will have a Sooner athlete in action.
The North Texas Invite marks the 2011 outdoor debut of 2010 outdoor All-Americans Brittany Borman, Karen Shump and K.P. Singh. Both Borman and Shump will compete in the discus, an event that are ranked fourth and sixth, respectively, in the nation while Singh will take to the throws ring in the discus and the hammer throw. The All-American in the hammer throw is ranked No. 11 in the event and No. 12 in the discus.
The Sooners have multiple athletes ranked in the discus as No. 4 Luke Bryant will join Singh in the men’s discus while No. 23 Bailey Wagner and No. 27 Lauren Guerrieri compete in the women’s event. Sherine Wells, ranked 36th in the 100-meter dash, rounds out OU’s list of ranked athletes competing this weekend.
Sorrell opens his final collegiate season after completing his indoor eligibility in 2010. The Memphis, Tenn., will compete in the top section of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. The senior will have a chance to jump in the early-season rankings in the event as he faces seven ranked opponents in the field, led by No. 14 Brett Hales of Weber State.
