NORMAN, Okla. -- After posting the lowest single-round score of the tournament Wednesday, the 28th-ranked University of Oklahoma men’s golf team finished third at the Big 12 Championship, the Sooners’ best showing since winning the conference title in 2006. The weather-shortened event was played at the 6,759-yard, par-70 Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
The Sooners carded a 280 (E) on Wednesday, six strokes better than the second-best score of the final round, to finish at 29 over par. OU, which started the day in sixth place, finished 10 strokes behind league champion Texas and six behind second-place Oklahoma State. The nine-team field featured six squads ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin top 50, including the Sooners.
"The guys did a really great job today in the final round," OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We almost climbed our way back into the tournament, which was fun for us. It was great to have the low round of the tournament. This shows us our potential and is a great way to build confidence going into NCAAs."
Teams began Wednesday by completing the second round, which was suspended Monday due to darkness. Play on Tuesday was canceled due to ice and cold, and the tournament was shortened from 72 holes to 54.
In his best showing of the season, senior Abraham Ancer shot an even-par 70 in the third round to tie for third place for the second straight year in the event. Ancer recorded five birdies on the final 18 holes and finished with a three-round 215 (+5) to earn all-tournament honors for the second consecutive year.
Beau Titsworth shot a 2-over-par 72 in the third round to complete his first Big 12 Championship at 9 over par. Tisworth tied for 14th place, the fifth time this season that the freshman finished in the top 20.
Senior Will Kropp and junior Michael Schoolcraft tied for 17th place, each recording a three-round 221 (+11). Kropp climbed the leaderboard 18 spots on Wednesday after registering three birdies in the third round to post a 1-under 69. Schoolcraft shot a 74 (+4) on the final 18 holes.
Tied for 19th place, sophomore Charlie Saxon concluded the tournament at 13 over par. Saxon recorded an eagle on the par-five seventh hole Wednesday and added three birdies en route to a third-round 69 (-1).
The Sooners will find out Monday, May 6 if they will compete in an NCAA Regional May 16-18. The NCAA selection show will begin at 8 p.m. CT and can be seen on NCAA.com.
