Wrestlers Topple Bucknell, Advance in Virginia

NORMAN, Okla. – The 10th-ranked University of Oklahoma wrestling squad (6-0-1) advanced in the championship bracket at the 30th Annual Virginia Duals Friday afternoon with a dominant 28-7 victory over Bucknell.

Second-seeded Oklahoma claimed eight of 10 bouts against the Bison (4-4) and advances to face seventh-seeded Virginia Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT.

Fifth-ranked Zack Bailey (11-5) and No. 12 Nathan Fernandez (18-4) scored OU’s only bonus points against the Bison. Bailey earned a 13-5 major decision over John Regan which spurred on four straight wins by Oklahoma to put the match out of reach for the Bison.

Heavyweight Fernandez posted a pin to close out the dual over Conor Sweener (4:24), his sixth fall of the year.

In the marquee matchup of the dual, fourth-ranked Sooner Kyle Terry outlasted seventh-ranked Kevin LeValley by a 6-4 decision in the second sudden victory period. Tied at three after the final period, Terry outscored the Bison 3-1 in overtime to push his season record to 13-2.

Earning decision wins for Oklahoma were Jarrod Patterson at 125 pounds, Shane Vernon at 157 pounds, Tyler Caldwell at 165 pounds, Erich Schmidtke at 184 pounds and 197-pounder Eric Lapotsky.

Bison David Marble, ranked No. 18 at 133 pounds, defeated Kendric Maple by a 14-2 major decision and No. 17 Shane Riccio earned a 3-0 upset win over eighth-ranked Jeff James at 174 pounds.
