TULSA, Okla. -- Andrei Daescu advanced to the finals in Tulsa, Okla., at the 2007 ITA Central Regional Championships.
Daescu began the day by defeating Edson Abrao of Arkansas-Little Rock, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
With the victory, Daescu moved on to the semifinals to face No. 1 seed and preseason No. 15 Ivan Puchkarev of Oklahoma State.
Daescu defeated Puchkarev by a score of 6-0, 6-2, to claim a spot in next weekends ITA National Indoor Championships, in Columbus, Ohio.
"Andrei has played as well as anyone in the tournament and I am very proud of how he is competing," head coach Paul Lockwood said.
The finals are scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday morning where Daescu will face Delibar Pavic of Drake.
"I am also excited for Andrei because this tournament had a very strong field and he has earned a spot in the National Indoor Championships," Lockwood continued.
The doubles team of Federico Chavarria and Daescu continued their strong play by defeating Christopher Nott and Dmitriy Lebedev of Arkansas, 9-7, in the semifinals.
The Sooner duo moves to the finals Sunday afternoon immediately following the singles matches to face No. 1 seed Colin Mascall and Blake Strode of Arkansas.
"Our doubles team played some very good tennis today and I am extremely proud of them for finding a way to win," Lockwood said.
The tournament will run through Sunday, Oct. 28, with the winners of the singles and doubles competition receiving draws in the ITA National Indoor Championships held in Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 1-4.
The winner and runner-up of the tournament in singles competition will advance to Columbus along with the winning team in doubles action.
The Sooners are nearing the end of the fall slate with competition remaining following the ITA National Indoor Championships. Oklahoma will compete in the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., Nov. 2-4.
