“The Sooner softball sisterhood is heavy-hearted and grieving over the loss of one of our own in Mariee Mena. Mariee had a beautiful smile and infectious laugh that always lit up the stadium. She was a blue-collar athlete and one of the fiercest competitors to ever play in a Sooner uniform,” said Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso. “Mariee had a fighting spirit both on and off the field, and she worked diligently to make herself better, as well as those around her.
"It was inevitable that Mariee’s next step was coaching. She used her God-given gift to teach, coach and share her life with young children. Mariee finished her life doing what she loved most. She had a strong commitment to family, teammates and friendships and that will never leave us. Mariee touched many lives, and I am honored she called me “Coach” during her lifetime. We will all miss her greatly.”
A native of Escondido, Calif., Mena was a 2004 second team All-Big 12 selection and named to the NCAA Regional all-tournament team that season. She was a member of the Sooners’ 2003 and 2004 Women’s College World Series teams. Mena was a member of Oklahoma’s 2007 Big 12 Championship team.
