Sooners Dominate John Jacobs Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma track and field teams hosted the 43rd annual John Jacobs Invitational Saturday in Norman. The Sooners dominated the event, winning eight events and claiming a total of 40 top-10 finishes. Nine Sooners set collegiate bests in their respective events.

Oklahoma’s 4x100-meter relay teams opened track events with a sweep of the men’s and women’s titles. Shawna Anderson, Sherine Wells, Shelleyeka Rolle and Ti’Anca Mock ran a season-best 45.27 seconds to win the women’s side, while Marcus Anderson, Eric Cray, Ethan Baker and Evan Pierson clocked a time of 40.88 seconds to win the men’s title.

Anderson took top honors in the women’s 100-meter dash with a season’s best time of 11.88 seconds. She finished third in the 200-meter dash, running 24.51 seconds. Pierson won the men’s 100-meter dash in 10.64 seconds, while Michael Ervin was fifth in the 100.

Kelly Waters won her first outdoor 3,000-meter race as a Sooner, crossing the line in 10:24.70. Waters previously finished second in the event at the 2009 John Jacobs Invitational. Jamel Wood won the men’s 400-meter dash in 47.33 seconds, while Eric Cray came in fifth.

Bailey Wagner had a strong day in field events, winning the women’s shot put title with a throw of 51 feet and three-quarter inches. Wagner was one of three Sooners to finish in the top 10 of the event as Rylee Rackley threw a collegiate-best 47-5 to finish third. Alex Morgan was sixth.

Wagner was among four OU competitors to finish in the top 10 of the women’s discus throw. Brittany Borman led the group as the top collegiate finisher (183-0). Wagner improved her collegiate-best mark in the event to 173-0 to remain in fourth on the all-time program list. Lauren Guerrieri was fourth with a season’s best throw of 161-10. Ashley Kowalewski was third in the women’s javelin throw.

Kristen Rice cleared a season’s best 5-7.25 to win the women’s high jump title. Conrad Aaron was the top collegiate finisher in the men’s shot put with a season’s best throw of 53-7.50. Landon Sharp improved his mark in the men’s high jump, clearing a collegiate-best 6-9 to finish second. Sharp was the top collegiate finisher in the event. Teammate Christian Johnson was third (6-5).

Luke Bryant became just the second OU men’s discus throw to eclipse the 200 feet mark in the event as he upped his collegiate best to 202-4 to finish fourth in the event. Bryant has the second-best mark in program history. Aaron was 11th in the event with a collegiate-best 163-0.

Nathaniel Winfrey was OU’s top finisher in the men’s 200-meter dash, running a collegiate-best 21.40 seconds to take fourth. Ervin was ninth, also running a collegiate-best (21.90). Tre Lathan finished just behind Ervin in 10th.

Tre Lathan was second in the men’s 110-meter hurdles (13.99), while Nathaniel Winfrey was third. Matt Wicks clocked a collegiate-best 57.91 seconds to finish eighth in the men’s 400-meter hurdles.

Claire McConnell took second in the women’s long jump with a wind-aided mark of 19-3.50. Newcomer Jim Anturri and Seth Lewandowski were sixth and seventh respectively on the men’s side. Lewandowski cleared a collegiate-best in the pole vault to finish sixth, while Jake Huddleston was OU’s top finisher in the event, taking fourth with a clearance of 15-7. Lewandowski also took third in the men’s javelin throw.

Alex Acker was the top collegiate finisher in the women’s pole vault, taking second overall, while Jacy Bennett was fourth and Morgan Nichols 10th.

Rolle finished fifth in the women’s 800-meter run, while Robin Ray took eighth in the women’s 1,500-meter run.

Holden Mitchell set a new collegiate best late Friday evening the men’s hammer throw (186-3), while Rylee Rackley was third on the women’s side (172-9) and Angel Togafau (169-9) was fourth.

Oklahoma is back in action this upcoming weekend, April 18-21 at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., and the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
