KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The University of Oklahoma wrestling team will send senior Robbie Waller and freshman Teyon Ware into the finals of the NCAA Tournament in Kansas City, Mo, at Kemper Arena tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Oklahoma sits in fourth place, just two and a half points behind Lehigh. Oklahoma State currently leads the tournament with 109 points.
Ware, a 141-pound true freshman, defeated Jason Mester of Central Michigan in a 1-1 sudden victory. Ware chose bottom in the second overtime and was able to score the escape to claim the tiebreaker win. Tomorrow Ware will face Northern Iowa's Dylan Long in the 141-pound finals. Ware's win would mark the first time that a true freshman has claimed the NCAA title since Oklahoma State's Pat Smith claimed the 158-pound title in 1990.
Senior Robbie Waller, who finished sixth in last year's tournament, defeated Lehigh's Brad Dillon to propel himself into the 174-pound finals. Waller, the No. 3 seed, will meet unseeded Carl Fronhofer of Pittsburgh tomorrow.
Oklahoma's Josh Lambrecht once again fell to Oklahoma State's Jake Rosholt. Rosholt, who defeated Lambrecht in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championships, recorded the upset when he scored the 9-2 decision. Lambrecht was knocked into the consolation bracket, where he will face Ben Heizer from Northern Illinois. Lambrecht, who is guaranteed All-American honors, must beat Heizer to make it to the 184-pound consolation finals where he will face either Jessman Smith from Iowa or Clint Wattenberg from Cornell.
Senior Bo Maynes lost to Michigan State's Nick Simmons, 6-4, at 125 pounds. Maynes, a senior from Salina, Kan., closed the gap in the final period with a takedown, but was unable to secure the win.
Oklahoma's other consolation competitor was senior Tom Grossman, who was defeated, 7-3, by Fresno State's Marcio Botelho at 197 pounds.
