TULSA, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's tennis team concluded a successful first day of competition Friday afternoon at the Hurricane Invitational in Tulsa. After winning four of their six singles matches and sweeping their doubles matches against Missouri State, the Sooners went 1-1 against Wichita State in doubles matches.

The three-day invitational also included players from Tulsa, Kansas and Oklahoma State.

In singles competition, sophomore Rachael Cox was the lone Sooner to sweep her match in two sets. Cox routed Mali Gakovic, 6-3, 6-0.

After winning her first set, freshman Brittany Baldy dropped her second set to Paty Manzur, 1-6. Baldy was able to rebound, however, and pulled out a victory in the third set, 6-2.

Picking up the Sooners' other singles victories were sophomore Christi Baxley and junior Monica Purice. Baxley picked up bookend wins in her match against Liz Garza by counts of 6-3, 2-6 and 6-0. Purice, who faced Nora Kuruc, dropped her first set, 1-6. Despite the loss, she came back to win the final two sets, 6-3, 6-1.

Sophomore Chelsea Orr and junior Anne Carter picked up the only two singles losses for Oklahoma on the day. Orr, who competed against former Sooner Amanda Pratzel, dropped her first set 6-3. Orr came back in the second set to post a win but fell in the final set, 6-2. Carter won her first set against Maja Stanojevic but lost her second-set, 7-5, and the third set, 6-0.

The Sooners dominated the doubles and swept Missouri State in three matches. Baxley and Orr teamed up to defeat Garza and Stanojevic, 8-6, while Carter and Purice blanked Kuruc and Pratzel, 8-0. Cox and Baldy also picked up a win against Gakovic and Manzur, who fell hard, 8-0.
