NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's soccer team continued its impressive play during the spring season of 2002 with a sweep of Brigham Young (1-0) and Arizona State (3-0) last Saturday in Tempe, Ariz. Junior Krissy Dawson sparked the Sooners' offense by scoring three of the team's four goals on the day. Oklahoma moved to 3-1 this spring against Division I foes and will host Kansas and Southern Methodist in its next spring matches on Sunday, April 7, at the OU John Crain Soccer Field.
In the first game against Brigham Young, junior forward Krissy Dawson scored the match's lone goal on a free kick with five minutes to play. Dawson had been fouled at the top of the penalty box and was able to convert.
Against the Sun Devils, the Sooners were able to grab momentum early with a pair of goals in the first half. Dawson scored her second goal of the day and OU doubled the lead after freshman Kirstin Karfonta tallied a goal off a free kick from 35 yards out. Dawson made 3-0 with a breakaway score in the second half.
Head Coach Randy Evans
On the team's overall performance and its spring goals:
"It turned out to be a very exciting weekend for us. We've definitely challenged the team with our spring schedule and they have responded with impressive fashion. We're using the spring to work on parts of our game that will us better in the fall. We're not very results oriented in the spring, we just want to get better, although it can't help but improve our confidence to be competitive against some great teams."
On junior Krissy Dawson:
"I'm thrilled for Krissy (Dawson) to have a such a big day on her return home and to the field she played on as a freshman in college."
On the Sooners' defense:
"I was most impressed with the play of our back three defenders. Brittany (Davis), Erin (Young) and Kirstin (Karfonta) did a tremendous job on the back line, both in organizing our possessions and just smart, hard nose defending."
