DES MOINES, Iowa — Candyce McGrone broke the Oklahoma record in the 100-meter dash Saturday at the 102nd Drake Relays as OU swept the event with Mookie Salaam winning the men’s event. McGrone broke a three-year old Oklahoma record while running a PR with a time of 11.17 to break the previous record of 11.21 run by Scottesha Miller in 2008.

The first-year Sooner transfer used the performance to defeat two athletes ranked ahead of her entering the weekend. McGrone, who moved to fourth in the Big 12 and ninth nationally, defeated No. 5 TIffany McReynolds of Baylor (11.19) and No. 11 Chelsea Hayes of Louisiana Tech (11.38).

Salaam swept the event for OU by clocking a season-best time of 10.20 in the event, which is a PR and third-fastest time in Oklahoma history, bettering his previous best of 10.25 from 2010. Salaam’s new time ranks 12th nationally and fourth among Big 12 athletes as it gave the junior his second 100 title of the season after winning the event at the John Jacobs meet.

Jasmine Simmons leapt a season-best 42-9.50 (13.04) in the triple jump to move to No. 3 in the Big 12 as she finished second in the event while moving from No. 41 in the nation to No. 13. The senior defeated nine opponents ranked ahead of her while Nebraska’s Mara Griva won the event with a jump of 43-3.75 (13.20).  The jump eclipses Simmons’ previous best of 42-4.75 (12.92) and had it not been backed by a 2.3 meters-per-second wind, would have ranked No. 2 in Oklahoma history.

The 400-meter hurdles saw Eric Bailey clock his best time of the season as he finished second overall with a time of 50.39. The junior who entered the meet ranked No. 10 nationally defeated No. 7 Carson Blanks of Mississippi while finishing behind No. 5 Lee Moore of Mississippi with a time of 49.96. Bailey’s performance moves him to No. 3 in the Big 12 while jumping to No. 7 in the nation.

The quartet of Sherine Wells, Shawna Anderson, Simmons and McGrone combined to run the fifth-fastest 4x100-meter relay in Oklahoma history as they finished third with a time of 43.99. The time moves the group up to No. 4 in the Big 12 while putting it less than a half-second behind the Oklahoma record in the event.

Jumping against a headwind, Ti’Anca Mock used her second-best jump of the season, 20-7.25 (6.28), to finish third in the long jump on Saturday. Mock actually tied Francine Simpson of Kansas in the event but Simpson had the better second-best jump to move Mock to third.
