NORMAN, Okla. Women’s gymnastics head coach Steve Nunno announced his team captains for the upcoming season today. Kristen Cox and Tiffany Willin will take the leadership role in 2006 and perform as captains for the team.
“I think it will be a fun year with them as captains,” Nunno said. “They will provide great leadership and motivation for the team.”
Cox is a senior from Memphis, Tenn., and was the Sooners’ most consistent performer during the 2005 season. She set a career best on bars (9.85), beam (9.825) and floor (9.925) last season and started competing on bars for the first time in her collegiate career.
Coach Nunno is excited to have her as a team captain and looks forward to the leadership she will bring.
“Kristen is my first recruit I have coached for all four years. She is a very popular person with team members. It is only right that she finishes out her collegiate career as a team captain. She brings commitment to the team and has a great personality to lead us this upcoming year,” Nunno said.
Willin is a junior from Cape Coral, Fla., and was honored as an All-American in 2004 on vault. In 2005, she competed on vault and floor at every meet and was added onto the bars team for the national championships. She recorded a season-high 9.925 on bars against T.W.U., winning the event and scored a career best 9.875 twice on floor last season.
Coach Nunno knows Willin’s work ethic will set a great example for her teammates.
“Tiffany is one of two First Team All-Americans we have had in the past 15 years. It is only fitting that she is a team captain. She brings great accolades to the team and has a dynamic work ethic,” Nunno said.
Each week for the next eight weeks Cox and Willin will be writing a weekly team captain log.
